How the scale works
The decibel scale is logarithmic. A 10 dB increase sounds roughly twice as loud to the human ear, and it carries far more sound energy than the plain number suggests: 80 dB is about twice the sound energy of 70 dB, and 120 dB is about 32 times that of 70 dB. So a 55 dBA vacuum isn't 15% quieter than a 70 dBA one. It's closer to half as loud.
Ratings are usually given in dBA, not plain dB. The "A" means the measurement is weighted to match how the human ear responds, which plays down the very low and very high frequencies we barely notice and keeps the number closer to what a person actually experiences.
Manufacturers typically test to IEC 60704-2-1, the international noise test code for household vacuum cleaners. It calls for a semi-anechoic room and several microphones placed around the machine to measure total sound power, not a single reading from one spot.
Practical checkIndependent reviewers usually verify a published number with a simpler setup: a sound meter 1 meter from the vacuum's path, 15 cm above the floor, A-weighted, in a room with background noise under 35 dB. That's what the diagram above shows.
The two don't always agree. Brands that cite the same standard can still differ on microphone distance and which power mode they measure, so treat a 2–3 dBA gap between two spec sheets as noise, not a difference you'd actually hear.
Everyday reference points
The shaded band below marks where robot vacuums in our catalog fall. Sounds that land inside it, a refrigerator hum, a sewing machine, a normal conversation, are genuinely comparable in loudness. Sounds outside it, a whisper on the quiet end or a car horn on the loud end, are not.

That gap is also why we don't chart noise level by launch year the way we do suction power: coverage has stayed too thin and uneven across years for a year-by-year median to mean much.
